    Overview
    Soiling is the process whereby dirt, dust, and organic/inorganic contaminants deposit on the surface of photovoltaic (PV) modules and it can cause significant economic losses.
    The ZTD-6 is a new optical PV soiling sensor that estimates the soiling ratio from the optical characteristic of the soiling accumulated on a PV glass. It designed no moving parts and limited maintenance.

    The soiling ratio is a property of the PV array cleanliness condition. Soiling measurement instruments approximate the true soiling ratio of the PV array by measuring the impact of soiling on a sensor surface of the instrument and assuming that the soiling condition of the PV array is the same as that of the sensor surface (IEC61724-1:2021).

    They are usually mounted in the ‘plane of array’ (with the sensor surface parallel to the solar panel) when used for monitoring of photovoltaic soiling. For the solar energy industry, the ZTD-6 meets the IEC 61724-1:2021 standard.

    Figure 3 shows several installing methods of ZTD-6. The PV weather station related sensors (e.g., Pyranometer, Temperature, Humidity and Pressure) are also included.

    Figure 4 shows the results of ZTD-6 monitoring results at a PV station. There are three instances of dust accumulation (red) and four instances of rain and snow (blue) between December 26, 2023 and March 28, 2024.
    The first soiling process: From January 4th to January 13th, 2024, which took about 9 days, the soiling ratio decreased from 100% to 98.4%, and the soiling loss reached 1.6%;
    The second soiling process: From January 27 to February 17, 2024, the soiling ratio decreased from 100% to 96.5% within 22 days, and the soiling loss reached 3.5%;
    The third soiling process: From February 19 to March 23, 2024, the soiling ratio decreased from 98.8% to 96.4% within 33 days, and the soiling loss reached 3.6%.

    We need to pay attention to December 2023, the soiling ration decreased from 100% to ~97% at night and increased from 97% to ~100% at ~10:00am due to the frost and ice at the surface of the panel. It means the ZTD-6 can monitor frosting/icing events et al.
